Story
Causeway is a gritty love story between a young Singaporean man, Ah Xiang, and a young Malaysian woman, Zhen Zhen. The lovers come from the working class and are marginalised by society. They meet through a mutual friend and fall in love. As the story unfolds, Ah Xiang’s fate becomes inexplicably intertwined with that of a middle-aged Deputy Public Prosecutor, Mr Lian, who ultimately decides his fate. Although they never truly meet, both men are bound by a common passion for a love song by Teresa Teng.
The film provides a general social and political commentary about the working class and the relationship between Singapore and Malaysia. And as the title suggests, the causeway between Singapore and Malaysia serves as a metaphorical motif that appears throughout the film.
Characters
Ah Xiang – Age 24/25 (Singaporean Chinese)
An average Singaporean man from the lower rungs of society. A high school graduate, he is an underachiever who works as a car mechanic. Tall, lean and tan, he exudes a certain unpolished sort of charm and charisma. He speaks Mandarin, Cantonese and Hokkien.
Zhen Zhen – Age 22/23 (Malaysian Chinese)
A pretty and slim Malaysian girl of average height. She works at a factory in Singapore and yearns for a better life. She speaks Mandarin and Cantonese.
Director’s Profile
Alson Ho is a freelance director and editor. Until recently, he was co-founder of Embassy Productions, directing television commercials and corporate projects, designing motion graphics as well as conceptualizing, directing and producing promotional trailers and broadcast programmes for television stations.
A visual arts graduate in film and television production from Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art, he has about 20 years of experience in the production line, and has worked previously as a video editor, promo producer and creative director at MediaCorp.
Alson has consistently won acclaim for his strong body of work, including the Promax International Gold Award, the Broadcast Design Award Gold and the Apollo Award. He has also made the finalist selection at the New York Festival.
